All Aboard the C. P. Huntington Engine at Cabin John Regional Park Near Avalon at Grosvenor Station in North Bethesda

It may not be the only thing to do at Bethesda's Cabin John Regional Park, but it's clear that the C. P. Huntington mini train is one of the most popular options. Named for the 1863 locomotive after which it was modeled, the miniature train chugs along on a two-mile path around the park. Kids and adults can climb aboard about every 10 minutes—that's roughly how long it takes the train to make one circuit.

If you're more interested in seeing the park by foot, check out one of its nature trails. The experts at Local Grove Nature Center can give you some ideas about which trail to take, and they can also introduce you to the local ecosystem with a film. You can also bring the kids to Cabin John Regional Park's playground or ice-skating rink, play against your friends atop the tennis courts, or pack up the car and spend the weekend at the campground. The outdoor activities all await just a short trip away from Avalon at Grosvenor Station.
