Comfort and Elegance Collide at 80 Thoreau Near Avalon at Lexington

Ian Calhoun had barely laid hands on his business school diploma when he opened 80 Thoreau in Concord, his hometown. Yet it didn't take long for his education to turn the upscale eatery into a success. Located just outside of Boston, not far from Avalon at Lexington, Calhoun's 80 Thoreau went up against some steep competition—and yet it still came out on top as one of the area's most popular restaurants.

Located inside of a former train depot, 80 Thoreau doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, however, is a different story. Its second-floor dining room and bar are adorned in an elegant-yet-comfortable way that matches the restaurant's upscale fare and not-so-upscale fare. Dishes like fluke crudo with pickled rhubarb and gnocchi with eggplant puree wow food critics, but average eaters are generally more attracted to the juicy burgers and craft beers. Head to 80 Thoreau in Concord for either type of food and drink.

Haute Coffee: Make the Short Trip From Avalon at Lexington for Quality Coffee, Tea and Treats

The folks at Haute Coffee take pride in brewing smooth, flavorful, and hearty coffee and espresso beverages. The way the drinks are made has a lot to do with the quality of the coffee here. The locally owned shop in Concord grinds all of its beans and makes each cup individually using the pour-over method.

The beans are shipped from North Carolina's award-winning Counter Culture and the teas hail from Paris-based Palais de Thes. Whatever you order, you can expect it to be fresh. Every drink is hand-pulled and the baked goods and other bites are made with organic and local ingredients, whenever possible. Stop in for breakfast and enjoy a granola bar with your morning coffee. Regulars can't say enough about the tartines &mdashmdash; roasted butternut squash with peppery arugula and chevre. When it comes to drinks, the Haute Latte is quite popular, thanks to the honey and cinnamon that add a little extra flavor.
