Explore a Former Governor's Estate: Gore Place Near Avalon Bear Hill in Waltham

Its name might not be as recognizable as Monticello, but Gore Place is still widely considered the "Monticello of the North." It shares a few characteristics with Monticello, the former estate of Thomas Jefferson. Not only was Gore Place inhabited by a politician—its namesake and Massachusetts state governor Christopher Gore—but also it captures a period of history that's long since passed.

Gore Place showcases architecture and artifacts from the Federal period when it was built. It's perhaps one of the most striking and awe-inspiring mansions in the Northeast, and the public is welcome to tour it every day during standard open hours. If you want to come on a full moon tour, check the calendar for the next one and show up to experience the mansion as it would have been without electric light. Gore Place is just a short trip away from Avalon Bear Hill, so it should be easy to make it here for an afternoon of exploring.
