Skip Lunch at Avalon New Canaan and Enjoy a Bowl of Soup at Darien's Backstreet Restaurant

On a cold winter's day, few things can warm you up faster than French onion soup. Backstreet Restaurant's version of the classic features ample amounts of gooey cheese and bits of crusty bread, making it a favorite at the Darien eatery. It's just one of the many soups that put this cafe on the map when it opened in 1986.

Soups aren't your only option at Backstreet Restaurant, though. It also serves salads and lighter entrees for lunch, as well as larger dishes for dinner. At midday, get a cup of the French onion soup with a chicken Caesar salad, one of the most popular lunch options. For dinner, you might want to try one of the gourmet entrees, like the calves liver pommery—it contains liver sauteed in sherry vinegar and dressed with pommery mustard. Come for brunch to enjoy French toast, steak and eggs, or any of the other classic dishes served.

Thali Near Avalon New Canaan: Authentic Indian Recipes From the Chef's Own Family

Thali refers not only to a popular restaurant in New Canaan, but also to a style of dish traditionally served in India and Nepal. The thali is a type of combination platter that consists of small servings of a few different traditional Indian dishes, so it's a fitting name for this eatery near Avalon New Canaan. After all, Thali compiles the dishes that its chef's family crafted in their own kitchen, and they're all authentic and fresh.

The coconut saag lamb is a good example of what Thali's chef can do. It pairs chunks of lamb with red chilies, roasted coconut, and creamed spinach sauce for a uniquely sweet-spicy dish. The andhra chicken is another signature eat, this one smothered with a sauce seasoned with cloves, cardamom, and poppy seed. No matter what you order, however, it will arrive with dal (a classic Indian stew) and jasmine rice. Make sure you add some of the naan to your meal, too. The garlic-laced version is popular, and so is the whole wheat roti.
