Unleash Your Inner Artist at Weir Farm National Historic Site, a Short Distance From Avalon Wilton on River Road

Weir Farm National Historic Site is more than just a beautiful place to take a stroll near Avalon Wilton on River Road. It's also a spot that has inspired art since 1882. That was the year that Julian Alden Weir, a pioneer of American impressionist art, came to his family farm in Connecticut and turned it into a haven for other artists. You can see some of his pieces at the farm today, as well as works by other artists who made the farm their home in later years, including Sperry Andrews and Mahonri Young.

You can also create your own art. From April to November, Weir Farm National Historic Site hosts Take Part in the Art events. In April and November, they're held Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and provide guests with colored pencils and pastels to make their own farm-inspired masterpieces. From May to October, two separate sessions run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the same days. However, on Saturdays and Sundays, you can work with provided watercolors instead of the pencils and pastels.

Snag a Seat in the Loft at Coffee Barn, a Short Drive From Avalon Wilton on River Road

Coffee Barn has only been a part of Wilton's landscape since 2012, but in that short lifespan it's already amassed a loyal following. That's partly because it offers an alternative to the big-name coffee chains without asking you to give up the quality of coffee you've grown accustomed to—and it's partly because of the barn.

True to its name, Coffee Barn is housed inside a historic barn in Wilton, not too far from Avalon Wilton on River Road. Its owners spotted the barn and made it their mission to breathe new life into it. They did just that, and today the barn is a warm space replete with weathered woods and rustic accents. There's even a loft where you can grab a table and overlook the rest of the cafe while you sip. Try the dark roast house blend, which features Mexican and Panamanian beans, or one of the seasonl lattes, such as caramel and Nutella in the winter.
